The Florida Keys are a chain of islands curving southwest from the tip of the mainland, linked by the Overseas Highway (US 1), which runs roughly 113 miles from Florida City to Key West over dozens of bridges. The most famous is the Seven Mile Bridge near Marathon.
You do not need to go all the way to Key West to feel it. A day trip to Key Largo or Islamorada gives you clear water, a state park and a sunset over the Gulf or the Atlantic. Key West itself is a long day from Miami, so most people stay overnight.
Go if you
- You want open water, snorkelling and a slower pace
- You enjoy road trips and are fine with a long day
- You are visiting for more than a weekend
Eat and drink
- Key lime pie is the local dessert. Every place claims its own version; sample a couple.
- Fresh fish sandwiches and stone crab (in season, generally from mid-October to early May) are the classic seafood choices.
- Waterfront shacks and dockside restaurants are worth the detour for sunset.
Don't miss
- John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo for snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips.
- Bahia Honda State Park, with one of the better beaches in the Keys.
- The Seven Mile Bridge drive, ideally with the windows down.
- In Key West: the sunset gathering at Mallory Square and the southernmost point marker.
Know before you go
- Fill up on fuel and water before long stretches between towns.
- Book Key West lodging well ahead on weekends and holidays.
- Respect reefs: do not stand on or touch coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
