The MacArthur Causeway is the main road link between downtown Miami and South Beach, crossing Biscayne Bay on a long bridge with Watson Island in the middle. The drive itself is the attraction: open water on both sides, the Miami skyline behind you and the Art Deco district ahead.
To the south you can see PortMiami's cruise ships docked in the channel, and on the bay islands to the north you can see some of the most expensive waterfront houses in Miami-Dade, including those on Star Island.
Go if you
- You are driving between Miami and the beach anyway
- You like skyline photography without a rooftop ticket
- You want a scenic way to arrive or leave
Eat and drink
- There is little right on the causeway. Eat in Brickell or downtown before, or on South Beach after.
- Watson Island has a few family attractions with snack options.
Don't miss
- Watson Island's waterfront for skyline and cruise-ship views.
- The cruise ships at PortMiami, which are especially dramatic on Saturday and Sunday departures.
- A slower alternate: the Venetian Causeway, which hops across small islands (it charges a toll).
Know before you go
- Do not stop or park on the causeway. Use designated lots.
- Event days (races, concerts, festivals) can close or slow the road.
- Rush hour in both directions is heavy, especially Sunday evenings.
Hours, prices and conditions change. Confirm details with the venue before you travel.
