GTA 6 age rating and IDverification: what is real
GTA 6 carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating. No ID check for the game itself is announced, but platform age checks in the UK and Australia may apply.

Grand Theft Auto VI is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB in North America. Confirmed Rockstar has not announced any age or ID check built into the game. Confirmed Separate platform checks, such as PlayStation's in the UK and Ireland, may apply to your account. Confirmed
The ESRB rating
Rockstar's official GTA VI pages, and the PlayStation and Xbox listings, show seven content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. They also carry an In-Game Purchases label. Confirmed We read these on the publisher and store pages, not on the ESRB's own site, which would not load for us. We would rather leave a board blank than guess. The PlayStation UK page says the ratings were unconfirmed when written, and the GTA 5 precedent it names (ESRB M, PEGI 18) is not a rating for this game. Confirmed
Is there an age or ID check?
Search suggestions mix several different things. Here is what is real.
- In the game: Rockstar has made no official statement requiring ID or age verification to play the single-player game. Confirmed
- PlayStation, UK and Ireland: Sony said that from June 2026 adult accounts that have not verified age can keep playing, but lose voice chat, messaging, parties and broadcasting. Methods include a facial scan through Yoti, a government ID or a mobile phone check. Confirmed Buying and playing games stays available, per the same report. Unconfirmed
- Australia: Online R18+ games are covered by age-assurance rules in force since March 9, 2026, per GTA BOOM. Unconfirmed GTA BOOM also says GTA Online still worked without checks as of its August update. Unconfirmed UNILAD Tech suggests GTA 6 players there may be asked to verify, which is an expectation, not an announcement. Unconfirmed
- Xbox: We could not open an official Xbox page on this, so we make no claim. Unconfirmed
Scams to watch for
A page that asks for ID, a card or a selfie "to unlock GTA 6" is not official. Rockstar has announced no such step. Stick to the PlayStation, Xbox and Rockstar sites.
